Sicily transportation/logistics advice sought

In late August my wife and I are flying into Catania and then heading to Siracusa for 3 nights. After that we are going to the island of Salina for 4 nights before heading back to Catania and flying home.

My question is, should we just plan on a taxi to take us from (1) Catania to Siracusa, then (2) Siracusa to Milazzo/Messina for the ferry/hydrofoil to Salina, and then (3) Milazzo/Messina to the airport at Catania?
I assume the alternative would be a rental car but since we don't need a car on Salina it seems like we would just rent the car at the airport in Catania and then drop it back off at Catania or drop it off at Milazzo/Messina?

Any thoughts or advice would be most appreciated. Thanks!

You can travel from Catania to Siracusa by train or bus, and from Siracusa to Milazzo by bus or train, probably with a change in Catania.

If you rent a car upon arrival at Catania, you can drive south to Siracusa and then north to Milazzo, stopping in Taormina if you wish.

You don't need a taxi from Catania to Siracusa when you can get on a very cheap, comfortable bus (you can buy a ticket at the window right outside the airport). I've never been to Milazzo but I highly doubt you'd need a taxi to get there either. I think once you check the distances, you'll realize what an expensive option a taxi would be.

Thank you both. Seems like renting a car would be the most convenient. I checked Hertz and I can pick up from the CTA airport and then drop off in Milazzo.

Research the parking situation before committing. Finding a place to leave the car in the historic section of Siracusa may be a challenge.

There is a large parking garage in Ortigia, near the daily market (last visited in 2014, but I think the garage is still there).
