Can I wear tennis shoes for all of the walking or do I need shoes with a sturdier grip for loose gravel on my Sicily tour?

I want to wear comfortable and practical shoes for all of the days walking and hiking, and maybe bring sandals for casual evening wear. Preferably, I just travel with the shoes I am wearing for the whole trip. But I am open to suggestions.

A fair amount of the walking on the tour is on uneven surfaces around ancient sites. I like sturdy walking shoes for that.
