Hi travelers,
What is the preferred way to go from Catania to Reggio Calabria? Is it recommended to have a car rental or rely on trains in the Calabria area. We have bee to most of Italy and have rented a car and rely on train.

Ferry from Messina to Villa San Giovanni. Bus or Train from Catania, which will load onto the ferry in Messina for a half-hour ride across the strait.

Hi so I can take a bus or the train from Catania to Messina which will board the ferry to Reggio Calabria? Should I book in advance? And what is your preferred booking agency?

IMO, the train is the best option. Book on the Trenitalia website. For bus it probably best to do it on a reliable 3rd party booking site like Omio. You can try individual bus companies, like Flixbus, whose app is easy to navigate compared to some other local companies. A good place to compare times and distances is Rome2Rio, though the information there is for a rough idea only.
