Seasoned travelers: any suggestions for the most direct and somewhat budget- friendly way to get from Catania to Puglia?? I've heard buses might be the way to go, but would love to fly as well.
I have had the great pleasure of driving to our trulli in the great town of Cisternino, Apulia. My suggestion is to pickup a car in Naples and then drive. It is a beautiful drive and easy to navigate. What is your final destination in Apuglia? More info and I can be more helpful. Once arriving in Apuglia you will need a car to explore the area unless you stay in one of the larger tows and rely on trains. The rail system isn't as accommodating as other regions.

You can fly from Catania to Bari for $45-163 each (4 hours including time from Central Catania to the airport and from Bari Airport to Central Bari). It's a very long trip by bus (7 to 11 hours) but cheaper by half; crossing the straits with the bus loaded onto the ferry is fun.
I believe only Volotea Airlines (a Spanish low cost airline) flies from Catania to Bari non stop. All other flying options would require a stop at some hub, such as Rome, which would make the trip longer than driving by car.
If I were in your shoes, I'd check Volotea first. Alternatively one Could rent a car in Catania and drive all the way from Catania. It takes a few hours but you can visit places along the way.
To fly all the way to Naples to rent a car and drive from there would make no sense, then why not drive from Catania?
Jonorato,
I totally agree with Roberto. There is no reason to fly to Naples... don't know what I was thinking. Rent a car and drive to Apuglia.
