Planning to go on RS trip to Sicily March 2027. Trying to work in going to Malta. I know ferries are seasonal. Would consider late Sept./Oct but understand transportation becomes seasonal then also.
Has anyone been on the RS trip to Sicily and gone to Malta for 1/2 day.
Trying to avoid summer heat and crowds so don't want to go May-August.
And also Sardinia.
Why not just fly?
It’s an inexpensive 45 minute flight from Catania to Malta year round. I think it’s worth more than a half day, if I’m interpreting that correctly,
Where are you going to be in Sicily?
The ferry from Catania takes more than 4 hours one way so it's way too long for a 1/2 day. It seems like the fastest is about 2 hours from Pozzallo but even that is about 4 hours round trip if you are in/near Pozzallo for access. Syracuse to Pozzallo, taking the ferry and back is most of a day with little time actually in Malta.
I agree that a flight is the only reasonable solution for a daytrip to allow any time to actually see Malta.

I took the ferry from Pozzallo in Sicily to Malta in February, leaving 830 am arriving in Malta at 10:15 am, so they are not as seasonal as you are thinking. But a 1/2 day trip would be hard to pull off. And even a day trip would be a pretty long day.
A friend who lives in Malta has done day trips to Sicily organized by a provider so imagine there would be some day trips organized going to Malta from Sicily.
The airport in Malta is located very close to the main city so it wouldn’t take long to get there (depending on traffic) but when I’ve flown to/from Malta the flights were often quite late. Maybe others have had timelier flights but thought I’d mention if your timing is so tight.
We decided that we needed to visit Sicily when we were in Mdina Malta, and when the sun went down, you could see Sicily. They are quite close. But the part of Sicily closest to Malta is probably the least interesting part of Sicily. And yes, we went to Sicily a year later. Unless you are just collecting countries, Malta is worthy of at least two or three days. Malta is quite different from Sicily.
