Sicily to Italy

Hello. I am going from Sicily to Italy this fall. Has anyone done the drive up the boot? I am just heading to the Amalfi Coast. Is it a nice drive? Are there stops to make? Or, should I just take the train? Opinions solicited!! Thank you in advance!

When I last vacationed in Sicily, I drove from Palermo, throughout the island to meet the ETB best of Rome tour. After disembarking from the ferry across the Strait of Messina, I drove up the autostrada, missing the turnoff to Salerno. Duh! So I proceeded to Sorrento and then went south along the coast road to Positano. This autumn, I'm returning to Sicily but flying to Naples where I'll rent a car and head south through Positano to Amalfi and Salerno before heading to Paestum.

If I were to make the drive again, I would visit Paestum on the way north and then follow the road through Salerno and up the Amalfi coast to Sorrento . I enjoyed the drive north and would certainly do it again making stops along the way and paying better attention to my route so I wouldn't get lost.

Really intersted in the responses here. We will be heading from Catania to Salerno. We actually decided to take the train and have heard that while the train itself isn't glamorous, I understand the views are nice.

Some beautiful views, if you have an extra night you could spend it in Tropea. Also recommend Paestum.
