We took the RS Best of Italy in 13 Days tour and loved the Amalfi coast. I'm looking now at the 10 day Sicily tour, and the pictures seem very reminiscent of the Amalfi coast. Am I wrong? Has anyone taken both tours who can give me a comparison of both tours? Or at least has been to both places? I love the thought of those gorgeous coastline scenes. Is the water that beautiful royal blue like it is in Cinque Terre? Thanks!
You have to remember that Sicily is huge - it has over 600 miles of coastline. There are many variations in the coastal landscape from place to place. Probably the town of Taormina & the coast nearby are the areas most reminiscent of the Amalfi coast. The water can be just as beautiful as Amalfi depending of course on the weather. We've been all over Sicily - although not on an RS tour - and really enjoyed it. The Greek & Roman ruins there are spectacular. There are 5 different UNESCO World Heritage sites on the island. I'd definitely recommend it.
Haven't been on the tours, but have been to both places, including one trip where we were in Sicily for week and the Amalfi Coast for 2 days after that. Tom above probably hit it on the head when he says that Taormina and the Amalfi Coast are similar. Both are pretty places with lots of pretty honeymooners high above the sea. But the rest of Sicily was NOTHING like the Amalfi Coast and actually Taormina was my least favorite part of the Sicily. The Sicily that we liked was not the "pretty coastlines" - it was the Greek ruins which were fabulous (espeically since we've not been to Greece), the very real city of Palermo - which we LOVED, the incredible church at Monreal, the baroque feeling of Siracusa, the much less crowded, very off the beaten path feeling of the whole place - very different from the rest of the Italy that we have seen. We loved Sicily and would go back in a heartbeat.
Have been to both places and, for me, while both are beautiful Sicily beats it by a long shot. The beaches I went to ( Castelammare del Golfo, Trapani & San vito lo Capo) beat any other beaches I've been to in Italy hands down. If beaches are your thing you won't be disappointed.
