Sicily question!

Hello!

My husband and I are flying into Palermo in May and have 7 days to spend in Sicily before we attend a 5 day retreat in the Noto area. It's so hard to choose what to visit in this time!

Just curious what people who have been there before think: Thoughts on either (we will have a car):

Option 1: Palermo (2 nights) >Trapani (2 nights)>Agrigento (1 night) >Ragusa or Siracusa (2 nights)

OR

Option 2: Palermo (2 nights)>Agrigento (1 night)>Siracusa (2 nights) >Taormina(2 nights) (seeing Mt Etna on the way)

I would greatly appreciate any thoughts! I love this forum!

Thank you so much!

So basically you have to choose between Trapani and Taormina/Etna). I would choose Trapani because it's a favourite of mine and it's less totally-tourism than Taormina, more 'real Sicily' if I dare use the term. But Taormina is very pretty - you can't go wrong with either. Here's some more info about Trapani:

Mt Etna is erupting slightly at the moment and just today they're talking about limiting tourist access in the area (parked cars are a safety issue) so you might want to keep updated about that

We actually enjoyed Taormina a lot but I would still do option 1. I think it is more efficient. I probably would choose Siracusa over Ragusa although we liked Ragusa very much too. I would stay in Ortigia.

I loved the Rick Steves Sicily tour I did in May 2024!!! I would take Trapani over Taormina any day. Taormina was by far my least favorite stop on our tour because it was mobbed with tourists. Have a great time!

I almost forgot to say....the hilltop top of Erice near Trapani is a special place. On our tour, we had a cooking class with the famous Maria Grammatico. As soon as it ended, she hustled back to her bakery on Erice's main street.

We were in Erice on a terrible foggy day. We found the bakery and bought a bunch of stuff. We were asked if we wanted to eat there. Because of the terrible weather, it was not crowded. We ate every morsel. Had we been in the US we would all have been sick. But the Sicilians know how to bake with far less sugar.

Do visit Erice. I will have to go back when we can actually see the town.

Both choices are wonderful and as said before it boils down to Trapani or Taormina. have you been to Sicily before? wIll you have a car or depend on public transportation. If not renting a car then look at the logistics of bus and train travel to get to where you want to go as it may be the determining factor. There are also private NCC drivers that can be hired for specific daytrips or transfers. You will really not need a car upon arrival in Palermo.. Weather in May should be very pleasant.

Trapani gives you proximity to Segesta, Erice, San Vito lo Capo, Castellammare del Golfo, Scopello, Marsala, Mazara del Vallo, the salt pans and Favignana. All are beautiful choices, and depend upon your interests. With just two nights in Trapani I, personally would prioritize seeing Trapani itself and Erice. The views from the top of the mountain are beautiful. It is often foggy, which creates an eerie atmosphere up there, but the fog and sunshine can shift quickly. If you have a car and are driving from Palermo to Trapani then consider a stop on your way at Castellammare del Golfo or Scopello. Trapani will be less crowded than Taormina but it is also a bigger city. Since you are staying 5 days in Noto area, I suggest staying in Siracusa, particularly Ortigia, over Ragusa. Ortigia and Siracusa have many beautiful sites to see.

Taormina is quite pretty and the teatro greco with Etna in the background is quite a jewel to behold. I also liked the community gardens in Taormina, peaceful, shady, uncrowded and great coastal views. Strolling the streets in Taormina is fun to do. As many have stated, Taormina can get very crowded as it is a prime cruise ship and tourist destination. But if you are keen on going I would go. Be prepared for crowds at the ruins in Agrigento too. If still undecided, look at tourist videos online to help you decide.

Whichever route you choose, I would do it quickly and make your lodging reservations as soon as possible because May is not far off and you will find that many places are already booked. Probably more true of Taormina than Trapani. I would also expect Trapani to be generally cheaper than Taormina.

Enjoy your trip, there are no wrong choices!
