I was wondering if a day trip from Catania to Siracusa and/or Taormina is feasible. Also, any recommendations for hotels and restaurants in these areas? We plan on staying in Catania for 3 nights because we want to see Mt. Etna, and for the proximity to the airport for the flight to Rome. (We will have a car.)
Yes, those are short enough for day trips by either car or train (train time one hour or less each way).
Hey Deb,
These Hotels in Catania are very nice and the prices are reasonable.

And for restaurants, you can review this link:

Thank you for the responses. I just checked and the Hotel Villa Romeo doesn't have availability for our dates. So, if anyone has other recommendations, I would appreciate them.
Both Siracusa/Ortigia and Taormina are feasible day trips from Catania.
Each place is about an hour from Catania, just in different directions. In Taormina we stayed at Hoel Bel Soggiorno. From it, the main part of town is about a 10 minutes walk, up the stairs near the hotel. It does have free parking.
In Catania I have stayed at Liberty Hotel, Via San Vito, 40 on two occasions. Clean, nice rooms, great staff, convenient location.
For a great lunch in Ortigia, try Casseficio Borderi. On the Best of Sicily tour last November, just about everyone ate there. Unique, fun experience. The sandwiches were so big many of the tour members had the second half for dinner.
