Sicily, or somewhere else?

My husband and I havent taken our honeymoon yet (2 yrs later) I am trying to figure out where to go. We can go beginning or ending of Sept. We would like the beach and culture. I was thinking Sicily, but have heard mixed reviews. Any suggestions?

Sicily is fabulous! I can't speak to the beach question (we were there end of December/early January); but for culture, it's one of the most fascinating places in Europe. It has remnants of ancient Greece, Rome, Arab and Norman civilizations. There are also many baroque buildings. The food is great; the landscape is beautiful. I'd return in a heartbeat.

Suggestion. We toured western Sicily in 05 for 8 days, then took the overnight ferry to Naples, then on to Sorrento for 4 nights.

Sicily is wonderful. It's the undiscovered Italy. Not as much English spoken here. Palermo is big, but other towns on the western end of the island are wonderful and quiet. Monreale is much quieter than Palermo.

We loved the Greek ruins of Selinunte and Segesta, the quiet back roads of the island and the really friendly Sicilian people.

Sorrento was great too...it was like being back in the US after Sicily, but still...we got to see Pompei and climb Mt Vesuvio. We took the ferry to Amalfi and hiked to Ravello.

Sicily was one of my favorite trips! If you have 2 weeks, or a bit less, it's totally worth the effort to get to the island!

I always think that a trip is a personal matter. Sicily is a great destination, but it depends on what you like for your honeymoon. Sicily is not a typical destination for honeymooners. If you are fascinated with its history, places, people and what you have heard about it, you should not be rethinking your choice. If you are just looking for comfort, Sicily is not the best place where to go. If you need more information about Sicily, check out http://www.sicilyguide.com

The town of Cefalu, centrally located on the north coast of Sicily, is a perfect town if you like beaches, history, geography, and convenient train connections to other parts of the island. Late Sept. would be better than early Sept. unless you like hot weather. I was there early in Oct. two years ago and the weather was perfect; the beach is in town and everything is walkable. There aren't lots of things to do beyond the beach, hiking the Rock, eating, puppet theater, a beautiful cathedral on a large piazza. The town reminds me a little of Bellagio.
