Sicily needs its own category

Perhaps the webmaster for the travel forum will consider a separate category for Sicily - apart from Italy category.
Please.

What would Garibaldi say! Meanwhile, what do you do about Rome, Florence, Venice, Paris, Barcelona, ....; they have more visitors than Sicily.

Why do you say that? The organizing principle for postings and searches appears to be "by country", so Sicily falling under Italy is consistent. If Sicily were broken out, then one could argue that Sardinia, Mallorca, Azores, Corsica, Canary Islands, etc. should be their own categories too.

What would likely happen is you'd have some people posting to the Sicily forum and others continuing to post under Italy out of habit (and then other people instructing them of their wrongdoing...LOL:-), so you probably wouldn't achieve your goal of keeping the two categories distinct even if you tried. Just curious....what would be the upside of making it more confusing?

The OP states that “Sicily needs its own category” but does not tell us why she thinks this. Not at all persuasive to say the least.

Hi Travelers,

I use this forum for all my trips to Italy, including Sicily! I have found it to be very informative. I will say however there is limited information on Sardinia and Corsica my next trip, in September. Perhaps they are less traveled. That being said I hope I will have as good luck as in the past. P.S. I also found limited information regarding Corsica in the France forum.

Happy Travels,

Lorieann

I think she has a point. Afterall, England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland each have a section and they are a part of a greater entity. Sicily is large and extremely rich in sites and sights. We often encourage people to devote at least 10 days to Sicily, a major trip for most.

Yes - Ireland, Scotland, England - a perfect comparison.
Ask any Sicilian - myself included - we do not refer to ourselves to be Italians.
When asked if we are Italian, we say, “No, I’m Sicilian.”
Sicily is a magnificent blend of so many cultures.

I’ve made three trips to Sicily in the last 4 years: 2 weeks, 2 weeks, 3 weeks.
And feel like I’ve barely begun to know this wondrous land.
I’ve been using the Lonely Planet book. (Lacking on so many levels.)
I look forward to Rick’s book - I’m sure it will inspire another trip - 4 weeks long?
People researching Sicily on the travel forum might prefer to not wade through Italy info to find it.
For anyone who hasn’t visited Sicily - I highly recommend this land of immensely friendly, warm, loving people. It’s very safe. And one of the few places I have no concern for terrorism.
I’m a solo woman traveler. Never a moment of concern or worry...

Oh, dear, sorry to disagree with Laurel, but Sicily is a region of Italy, with limited regional sovereignty. Northern Ireland, Ireland, Scotland, Wales are all considered nations in their own right.

Throughout Italy, most people define themselves by region or province, rather than by nation, but in an international context, Sicilia is defined as part of Italy.

Peace to you, Giusseppe and Anita.

And I notice this is posted in "Italy", not "General Europe". ;-)

Someone might suggest we need one for Tuscany too.
The Granducato di Toscana (Grandduchy of Tuscany)

Then someone else might suggest one for la Serenissima (the Most Serene Republic of Venice), one for the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies and one for the Stato della Chiesa.

I agree however that some could be combined. Maybe Spain and Portugal, Scandinavia, British Isles, Baltic States, Benelux etc. It should be based on the number of posts on each. Some sections are really empty because not many people go to certain countries and when they do they tend to combine several countries together in the region.

Maybe Sicily could be combined with Greece like in the old days...just sayin'.

BTW, very much enjoyed my (non-RS) 2-week tour led by an Italian archaeologist and Sicilian bus driver. Fascinating, beautiful, spirited, delicious, historical--a treasure.

Enjoyed my RS tour of Sicily but don't think (IMHO) it needs a separate category. I could name 100 other places that I think would also deserve their own board if one is created for Sicily.

I agree with Angelina and not just because I'm planning a trip to Sicily and would appreciate the ease of
finding information more readily. Part of the forum's purpose should be to facilitate the preparation for a tour
and Sicily may be the only tour designation without a separate category. Sicily, besides being larger and more
diverse than the other islands, is considered by Sicilians and many Italians as a separate entity and should therefore
warrant a separate forum category.

Sounds like the OP has a bit of personal and national pride involved in her suggestion, rather than just disinterested tip-seeking, as Roberto has deftly highlighted.

Bets, those certainly are the old days!

Many of us remember when several European countries were grouped together, and Italy was (I think) the only one with its own forum - remember "To the Boot"?

Which greater entity is Ireland part of ?

EU?

I think there will be a time when separate Forums for regions and cities within many countries will need to be considered .At the moment the RS forums are relatively quiet compared to say Trip Advisor and Fodors forums and they have multiple forums for countries and even special forums for Disney worlds and lands.
It is an idea worth considering but unless there is a great deal of traffic on the Italian forum about Sicily then I would suggest to leave it for the moment and see what the future brings.

On this Forum, there is an "Ireland" topic along with Scotland, England, and Wales. R.S. does not segment out Northern Ireland from the U.K. any more than he does Sicily from Italy, but it is a separate nation entirely.

I agree it could get out of control, and as Roberto suggested. perhaps the number of posts is a good way to view the need for a separate category.

No need to 'wade through' posts looking for items on Sicily, Just do an electronic search.
