Would like to base out of Cefalu for a few days. I plan to do day trips to Mascali and Piazza Armerina. Will this work and do I need a rental car? Thanks Al

A car would be the only practical way to do these day trips. You could take the train to Mascali, but it would take 4-5 hours each way. Piazza Armerina doesn’t have a train station, and train-bus schedules would be time consuming, and you wouldn’t have any time left to sight see.
Than you for the reply. I have read the other links. My main concern is keeping my 20 and 18 year old daughters occupied in a nice location while I search family records in the towns mentioned.
Then Cefalu would be good base for your family. Mascali would take about 2 hours and 15 minutes by car, and Piazza Armerina would take about one hour and forty five minutes.
Taormina would still be your best base. Taormina is only half an hour from Mascali and an hour and a three quarters from Piazza Armerina.
Not only would your family be happy in Taormina, you could take public transport to your towns from Taormina.
