Sicily mid September Accommodations and driving tips.

Arriving in Palermo on a Sunday stay 3 nights and plan on day trips. Suggestions for B & B, near public transportation, in a safe area with good restaurants and not too noisy. The fourth day pick up car and head south west. This will be our first visit to Sicily and was wondering how different from the mainland Italy is it for driving? We will have 10 nights and fly out of Catania. I have been advised to stay in another town other than Catania for perhaps 3 more nights and take day trips from there. Any help for where to go and stay is appreciated.

Thank you,

Lorie

You could stay in Siracusa and daytrip to Ragusa, Noto, and Villa Romana del Casale; or stay in Taormina and visit Mount Etna and other towns. Depending in your flight time, you may need one night in Catania.

Driving in Sicilia, outside of Palermo, is easy. Good roads and not a lot of traffic except near beaches in summer weekends. September should have less congestion than July or August.

I agree that Siracusa would be a very good place to stay as it is central to some wonderful towns. I would certainly stay a few days in Taormina, as you can get into the Mt. Etna area from there easily. . I know that you can get transportation from there to the airport in Catania, as we have done it several times. The driving should not be any more of a problem in Sicily than in Italy. and maybe less so as the roads aren't as crowded.
