Sicily lodging

We're thinking of traveling around Sicily on a flexible schedule. We're starting with 2 days in Palermo with prearranged hotel reservations. From there, we hope to travel around without predetermined accommodation just in case we choose to stay longer/shorter in a particular area. Any thoughts on this idea or suggestions? Inexpensive agriturismo or pension stays would be ideal.

Patrice, I can't help you at all except to say that my husband and I are doing this very thing in October of this year. If you go before that, can you let me know how it goes, and if we go first, I'll let you know?!

Agriturismi tend to get booked far ahead, and some require a specific number of nights. You will find lots of B&Bs, depending on when you go, check booking.com just to see a ion. Most small places in Sicily aren't listed, but you'll get an idea of what is there, costs, map locations. Cefalu can be an easy day trip from Palermo or if you want beach time you can spend a couple of days there.

Kim, our trip is Sept 27th thru October 21st. We thought we'd rent a car at Palermo airport & travel south to trapani, agrigento, and decide from there where the next stop will be.

There's a great place, Hotel Baglio Oneto, in Marsala. It's actually on the Marsala/Trapani line and close to Trapani airport. A touch pricey but not too bad really. Very nice place in an olive grove with a vineyard behind it, their own winery and a beautiful view overlooking the town and out to the sea.

I think at that time, you're probably okay with traveling without reservations after Palermo. Somebody with more expertise may know better, but to me it seems like places would have space available, and not yet be closed. It sounds like a wonderful time to travel to me!
