Hi,

I need advice and feedback about our itinerary.

Here are some questions.

Are guided tours recommended for any of these sights?

I can't be of a great deal of help here because you obviously have a major interest in the classical sites and I do not.

I would definitely move at least one day from Taormina to Siracusa, maybe two. Things I enjoyed in/from Siracusa that you haven't mentioned are: Archaeological Museum, Archaeological Park, Ragusa (the most interesting of all the baroque towns, I think), Modica, and Scicli. Check days of operation for the two archaeological activities in Siracusa.

Time permitting, you might want to try to get to the Greek site at Morgantina, which is in the interior not terribly far from the Villa Romana (which is outside Piazza Armerina and I'm guessing the reason for your visit). I did not go to Morgantina, but one of my guide books said it was worthwhile and extremely lightly visited by comparison to Agrigento et al.

I'm hoping May 9 is not the day you fly in from the US/Canada, because I believe visiting museums on arrival day doesn't work for very many people. At some point during your Palermo stay, I'd recommend a visit to one of the markets. If that doesn't work out, perhaps you can get to La Pescheria in Catania instead. Catania's historic district is very nice.

I took no tours in Sicily so cannot help on that point.

I didn't visit the arch. museum in Palermo. I took the bus in the morning to Monreale (the cloisters are worth visiting), then got off the bus at the stop near San Giovanni/Palatine Chapel and saw them, plus a self-guided walking tour back to the center of town. The ones in Agrigento and Siracusa are excellent. I spent a day at Agrigento, then stayed the night in Piazza Armerina so I'd have several hours at Villa Romana del Casale (a Wow), then ddrove to Ortigia (the old city of Siracusa - I recommend staying there). The small coastal towns are pretty much shut down on Sundays. Check what's open. I didn't get to Taormina but I've heard it's quite touristy. I spent several days in Ortigia - loved it. Be flexible about visiting Etna, it can be enveloped in clouds (not worth going then) when the coastal areas are sunny. I took a late afternoon train from Palermo to Cefalu for 2 nights (one full day) before going back to Palermo in the morning and picking up a car. Beautiful.

Too much time in Taormina for me. Take at least one day away, Maybe two and give them to Ortigia/Siracusa. We were advised to shorten our time in Taormina to 2 nights.

Agree with Suki, add more time to Ortigia. Although we love Taormina, our two nights there was just right. Another thought, include a day trip to Noto, Modica and Ragusa from Siracusa.

Enjoy your stay!

Thank you,

In my 3 nights in Ortegia, I plan to see the archeological museum, a boat tour, walking around Ortigia, and a day trip to Noto.
Maybe 4 night would be better.

In Taormina, I plan to visit the town and Etna and that area. Maybe 2 days would be enough.

I will think about it.

We did a similar trip. 16 days. If you like walking Zingaro is a wonderful outing. We also enjoyed a day trip to Catania - used local commuter train from our base Near Etna. Excellent WW2 museum in Catania.
