Ciao! We are considering a trip to Sicily. Is it a "must see"? We have traveled to Rome, the hilltowns, Cinque Terre, Florence, Venice, & the Dolomites.....and loved it all. Grazie-
Patsy
Well, I don't know if anything is a "must see" but there are plenty of sites worth seeing in Sicily. History on the island goes way back in time and every group that invaded seems to have left behind something to see, including Greek temples, Roman buildings, Norman and Spanish influence, etc. A week or two with a car would allow a lot of exploration, mostly around the coastline, with at least one trip into the interior at Piazza Armerina.
Guess it depends on what you're interested in but IMO yes. Sicily is my favorite part of Italy.
Love Sicily. Previous posters give great advice, especially if you have a car. I would add Morgantina to the list, it's just a few kilometers away from Piazza Armerina, the town near to the Roman Villa with mosaics being uncovered and restored every day (you can watch the restoration in progress). Sicily has everything - mountains, beaches, great food (sweets a little sweeter than on the mainland, generally) and a rich history.
We loved our 1 week in Sicily and would go back to see all the things we missed. It felt very different from our visits to other parts of Italy (Rome, Tuscany, Venice, etc). Tuscany is still our favorite region but we loved the Greek ruins at Selinute and Segestra, walking around Palermo, visiting monreale, erice, etc. it won't be the same as everywhere else you've been but that's a good thing!
We have done Sicily several times...and love it. It is so big, that it takes sefveral trips to just see the basics. Be aware that starting in June, it gets VERY hot there. The best time to go is in the Spring; it is just awesome then. The Aeolian Islands should also be included in one trip. We always use the Lonely Planet guidebook to reasearch/plan our trips there.
I went to Sicily in 1987. It was wonderful. First, people started asking "are you German? Norwegian?" There are far fewer Americans there. The sunrise on Agrigento, the sun set reflecting off the Norman church at Cefalu, the early morning boat ride to Levanzo, wow, they just bring back the memories. I just wish I could have taken the ferry to Tunis.
