Sicily in September/October HELP WITH PLANS!

Headed to Sicily for 2weeks in either mid September or early October. Is this enough time to do the island justice? Not sure which airport yet. Is there a better one to start with? Also, thinking of doing a day trip to Malta. My interests are wine/beer tours, quaint villages, ceramics/art glass, Also looking to book nice B&B, no more that 100euro per night. I am planning on renting a car and using buses. Any help would be appreciated. Grazie. Ciao

Im going in 3 months for little over a week. Im pretty sure you'd need more than a month, but my plan is to hit a certain area of the island (Coast) and then come back at a later time. So i'd pick Palermo or Catania and stay around those areas.

I don't think a day trip to Malta would be (substantially) worthwhile unless you have a specific, must-see site or two that you can focus on - it would be a really long day and you would only see a sliver of Valletta. Although it's compact, Valletta is chock-full of historical attractions, all of which close at 5pm ish...and it's packed with cruise ship visitors when the ships dock. If you can add Malta to your trip, I would recommend at least 3-4 full days if not more so that you can take in more than just Valletta. I did a Malta/Sicily trip of 4 full days in southeast Sicily and 6-7 full days in Malta - I felt like both trips were too rushed. On the upside, the flight to Catania from Valletta was only 40 minutes, so it was quick to get there and back (I decided against the ferry due to time/logistical constraints). I'm glad I got to see both but it would have been more relaxing to pick just one and not the other.

Two full weeks in Sicily sounds great - get the Lonely Planet book, it's very helpful.

By the way, we help everybody here.

Shouting is not really needed. I'm not sure that it helps get you either faster or better help.

All caps with exclamation marks just causes some potential helpers to bypass your questions. Thought you ought to know.

I wish I had two weeks (or even one) in Sicily this year. Say hi to the place for me.

You have 8 months for planning and drooling so I'm sure you will get what you need.

Is two weeks enough time to do the island justice? Depends on how you define justice. You can certainly hit the highlights in two weeks. You may want to look at samples of tours (RS has a Sicily tour) to get an idea of how most efficiently to plan your route. You could fly into Palermo and out of Catania - where will you be coming from?

Rent a car on your way out of Palermo - lots of places are easy to get to by bus or train (Cefalu, Monreale). You might enjoy Segesta since you will have a car (you can also get there by bus/train). Note that bus schedules are curtailed on Sundays.

You should take a look at Taormina (and Mt. Etna), Siracusa, Palermo (Cefalu and Monreale), Agrigento, Piazza Armerina (for the mosaics at the nearby Villa Romana del Casale). Quaint villages will appear on hilltops as you drive.

When you settle on cities, I can give you some hotel/b&b recommendations in your price range.

in 2014, we spent 10 days in Sicily at the end of September. Perfect weather. We could have used more time but we were able to see a lot. We flew into Catania, stayed in Taormina, Piazza Armerina, Agrigento, Cefalu and flew out of Palermo. We did miss a lot of Sicily but didn't feel rushed. Travel between towns was short. PM me if you want specifics about places to stay.

Thanks everyone for the information. BTW, I didn't mean to use all caps in the topic line.
Looks like Catania airport is the way to go. Now just need to narrow a few cities and accommodation and I'll be good. I'll be flying in from Amsterdam. Thanks again for the help

You can just edit your subject line - I believe it's pretty easy
