Sicily sounds like a fascinating place, and I have enough room in the itinerary for my trip next autumn to do it justice. However, my SO (who will be traveling with me at that point in the trip) thinks it will be hot, dry, dusty and brown in October (a "big pile of rocks," he says), and thinks we should save it for another time. Is he right? We are both history buffs, so I'm sure we would enjoy it. But seeing natural beauty is a big part of travel for us, too.
Hot in October? I doubt it. Comfortably warm, but not hot. Even in July it's not too bad along the coast where you get some sea breeze (maybe in the interior). Also October is sometimes rainy throughout the Mediterranean region. I can't predict the weather next October, but this year's summer in Italy has been much wetter than average, therefore nothing will be brown.
Mary Sue,
I didn't find Sicily to be "hot, dry, dusty and brown" or a "big pile of rocks" when I was there in mid-September. Sicily is also one of the places in Italy where I've experienced torrential rains of biblical proportions. As I recall, that was during the time I was in Taormina.
While there are certainly dry and rocky areas, there are also many beautiful green areas. I quite enjoyed the beauty of the diverse scenery, and also the incredible history and wonderful foods (I'm sure my waistline increased after several plates of Pasta all Norma).
Sicily also has some beautiful parks and nature preserves.
Mary Sue - A few years ago my wife and I spent 8 days in Sicily in early October, and the weather was fabulous. Every day was about 80 and gorgeous. We kept marveling about how nice it was: just cool enough during the day to be comfortable in the sun, and warm enough in the evening to eat every meal outdoors. What could be better?
