We have 7 days in Sicily this November. We are interested in food, local culture, markets, great places to stay, eat, or visit. Less interested in ruins. We would appreciate any recommendations!
Bruce, this is indeed a curly question. I have been to Sicily twice, in the most part for the history, and will visit again next year. Consider perhaps the Aeolie Islands (Lipari is a good base)for a night or two, Palermo of course, with pretty Erice not far away, and Cefalu in the opposite direction, and Taormina in the east. Are you intending to drive, or rely on local transport? Driving in Palermo and Catania can be perilous. Don't altogether discount the ruins; they are truly amazing, and from such varied civilizations.
Thanks for your reply. This is very helpful. Do you have any specific hotels to recommend? What is the best way to get around between cities without a car? If a car is advised, should we pre-rent it prior to arrival, or will we find comparable rates if we wait until we are actually there?
November is not a good time to visit the Aeolians. Cities would be good for cultural pursuits. If you will be flying to Palermo, there’s a bus from the airport to town and then you could bus to Erice, or take the train to Cefalu. If you will be flying to Catania, bus to Taormina or Siracusa. A car would be fine anywhere but Palermo and Catania, and you should pre-book the rental. Palermo and Catania have exceptional markets and restaurants.
