We are planning on being in Catania, Sicily for 9/25-29/2023. I am getting conflicting weather information when I research. Looks like high 70's to low 80's but saw a few posts which said it was very hot. Any comments would be appreciated, as I can still change our dates
Thanks
Hope this isn’t an apples versus oranges answer, but our current Sept/Oct trip Rome/Tuscany (not Sicily) has been, by all reports, much warmer than usual, or expected by locals. Highs in the lower to mid 80’s. This year has also been unusually dry, which has affected the grape and olive crops. Next year might be different - wetter, colder, or even hotter.
Sicily, being farther south, would tend to be even hotter. We were in Agrigento, even farther south than Catania, in late December 2012, and it was actually very warm - not over 100 degrees, but still hot outside, for 1 day. Rest of the trip was pleasant, but not overwhelmingly hot.
You’re looking at 5 days, 11+ months from now. Would mid to upper 80’s for a few days make a total difference? Maybe it’ll rain the whole time, maybe 70’s, maybe hotter or cooler. Unless the temperature would be a deal breaker, I’d say keep your dates, plan on mid 70’s to mid 80’s, and find shade and fan yourself if it gets a few degrees warmer. Catania will still, likely, be a tiny bit cooler than some other parts of Sicily, and late September will be cooler than late July.
We were in Ortigia at the end of September (this year) and western Sicily for a couple of weeks prior. All but one day was sunny and warm, highs mid to low 80s. We sweated some on our city walks but it was not unpleasant. The narrow streets in the old towns make a lot of shade. By the time we left the island earlier this month, the highs were mostly in the mid 70s.
On our late September, early October 2018 trip we were able to wear short sleeves most of the time. On a couple occasions we needed light jackets. Every year is different.
You can find actual, historical, day-by-day weather statistics for most cities on the website timeanddate.com. I'd just check a date range extending a week or so before and after your dates for the last five years. That should give you a reasonable idea of what temperatures to expect. You can go all the way back to 2009 or 2010 if you want to, by using the pull-down box above the graph.
