Thinking about visiting Sicily over "winter break" - end of December, over the holidays. An escape from the US Northeast winter and an opportunity to enjoy Italian culture in a more moderate climate. Has anyone vacationed in Sicily that time of year. Comments on weather - too cold to enjoy travel, rain? - and any other thoughts about this particular time to visit would be appreciated.
I visited Sicily the week before Christmas. The weather was comfortably cool but not cold - low 50's to low 60's. In the week I was there, there was no rain and I even got to play in the snow on the slopes of Mt. Etna. Remember that some sites and restaurants will be on holiday schedules over Christmas and New Year.
Had a terrific Sicily trip three yrs ago, Dec. 15-Jan. 1 (with OAT, Overseas Adventures Travel). Weather cool but easy - rain jacket occasionally but mostly a fleece & scarf, over T-shirt &/or sweater & sometimes puffy vest (but then I'm wearing gloves when my husband's in shorts). Most of our photos have blue skies. Like Philip says, know that Christmas Eve/Day & New Yr's are home-oriented, & many restaurants et al are shuttered or only open for big-buck parties. Sicily's amazing, the spectrum of history, cultures, topography, food, wine, food! Go!
