Sicily in 6 days- need ideas for best places to see

My husband and I will be travelling to Sicily in June. We will be there for 6 days total- not including travel days. We have never been to Sicily, and we would like some suggestions as to the best places to visit. We love water and food!

Pick one location, or at most two, and stick with either the western or eastern side. You can have a Sicilian experience but not see the whole island. It need 3 weeks to do it justice

Pick Taormina and Siracusa on the eastern side, for example, or perhaps Palermo, Trapani, or Cefalu in the west. The food is great everywhere.

There is a Rick Steves guidebook coming out, but maybe not in time for your trip. Pickup a guide by Fodor’s or Lonely Planet to help you plan.

If you go to the east side, try to include some of the lovely Baroque villages accessible from Siracusa by train or bus (or by car, of course). Ragusa seems to have the most to see. Noto, Modica and Scicli are also worthwhile.

If you go to the west side, I liked Erice, which is above Trapani. It is quite touristy, though not quite as far gone as the gorgeous Taormina (east).

You definitely need a guide book. Read it and see what sounds most intriguing.

It may be very hot in June, so be sure you don't book any hotels with reviews questioning the quality of the air conditioning. If you go west you'll be including Palermo. I'd want a very well located hotel so I could get back to it mid-day if I needed to cool off. Siracusa's large enough that location could be important there, as well.
