Sicily in 5 days

After 2 days in Naples & 1 traveling through Sorrento, Positano, Amalfi, & Salerno, we will be starting a 10 day culinary tour in Calabria & the east coast of Sicily (Taromina to Syracuse).

When that tour ends (on Easter Sunday!), we'll have 5 additional days to enjoy the area -- and are considering heading back to Sicily for the duration of our stay, heading home from Naples.

We don't want to do a frenzied 1-night-in-every-city- bopping around kind of thing, but realize there is so much to see on the island so it's really hard to decide where to go & how to spend our time.

Is Cefalu a good 'hang spot' for taking day trips to Palermo and maybe somewhere in the interior? We didn't plan on renting a car (too much hassle), but are unsure of busses, trains, etc

Is it reasonable to do 2 nights in Cefalu and 3 in Palermo?

Is the south preferable to spend the time in?

Interested in others' experiences & suggestions.

Thanks, fellow travelers!

Visiting the south side (Agrigento etc) is too chllenging without a car. Without a car I would base myself in Palermo. Cefalu is close enough and small enough to be visited from Palermo on a day trip.
Palermo and Monreale (on top of the hill) need at least two full days (3 nights). If you stay 5 nights you have time for maybe 2 day trips. Cefalu can be one. The other could be Segesta, or Erice, or Mondello (beaches). It’s up to you.

Where does your culinary tour end? And when will you be traveling? These factors could influence your decision.

Good questions --

The tour will provide transportation to the Lamezia Terme airport or central train station there. And we will have our time after the tour starting on Easter Sunday so Sunday, April 1 - Friday, April 6 (flight home leaves early, early Saturday, April 7th so will need to get back to Naples, have a hotel for overnight on Fri, April 6).

Since your tour ends on the mainland, I would consider spending the 5 days heading north and spending more time in the Naples area or heading east towards Matera and Puglia. We spent 2 weeks last March in just Naples and the Amalfi Coast areas and still didn't see everything we wanted to.
