Sicily in 2 weeks bases

Hi All!
Heading over end of September - beginning of October in/out of Palermo.
Would like to circumnavigate the island by car
Palermo, Erice, Trapani, Turks Stairs, Agrigento, Ragusa, Ortiga, Etna, Taormina Cefalu, Palermo
Without changing hotels every 2 days, what would you recommend for 3 or 4 bases?

You can visit Cefalu from Palermo by train. Palermo has the highest concentration of sights on the island, so it would definitely be one of my bases. But do not try to drive in Palermo! Traffic there is undisciplined; it was scary even being a pedestrian in that city.

You can visit Erice from Trapani by bus or the lift.

Ragusa can be visited from Ortygia, but it's not the only atmospheric Baroque town in that part of the island, so if/when I return, I'll be spending at least 2 nights in Ragusa in hopes of visiting some of Noto, Modica and Scicli.

You should be able to visit Etna from Taormina, or both of them from another location nearby. I am not fond of Taormina, which gets swamped by day-trippers, but some people are big fans of the town, which is physically lovely.

That's already four potential bases and we haven't addressed the Scala dei Turchi or Agrigento. Fortunately, they are quite close together.

I didn't drive in Sicily, but it's a place where a car can be beneficial for some destinations. I hope others will be able to suggest how to outline an efficient trip with minimal hotel changes. (Actually, that might be an interesting question for AI...)

Two weeks is sort of the minimum time I'd recommend for a trip to Sicily if using a car for part of the time. I had 17-18 days but no car, and it was not really enough for me.

It will probably be helpful to others if you tell us exactly how many nights you will be spending in Sicily. "Two weeks" could cover a considerable range.

Trapani and Erice can be visited from the same base. We stayed in Erice. Scala de Turchi is only a few miles outside of Agrigento. We visited it between Agrigento and Selinunte and Marsala.

How often to change hotels is a personal preference. Our preference is to move every couple nights rather than backtrack. On our trip in and out of Catania we stayed outside of Catania (day trips to Catania, Noto, Ortigia) , Agrigento, Marsala, Erice (day in Trapani), Monreale (took bus into Palermo), Cefalù, Taormina, and back to Catania.

Since most of the daily driving isn’t that long, pick locations to stop at between lodging locations.

Last spring, we stayed in Palermo, Erice, Randazzo (our Etna location), Ortigia, Ragusa, Catania (instead of your Taormina), Piazza Armerina (to see the Villa Romana instead of your Agrigento which we'd seen on an earlier trip), and finally Sciacca (on the southwest coast to see an Easter festival).

Had a car the whole time except in Palermo. Skipped around the island a lot because of the unfortunate timing of two operas and the Easter thing. So, your route makes much more logical sense!

I would visit Cefalu by public transportation while in Palermo, combine Erice and Trapani, stay in Agrigento and daytrip to Turks Stairs, choose either Ragusa or Ortigia (I'd pick Ragusa and do the longer day trip of 1.5 hours to Ortigia or skip Ortigia), and fly back from Catania instead of roundtrip Palermo if possible.

Despite having spent two weeks in Sicily before, and this latest trip was a month long, we found we just had to do more short stays (2 to 3 nights) and to sadly eliminate a LOT of things we really wanted to see. As you know, Sicily is stuffed full of excellent sites and cities and towns! I'm counting 5 accommodations for you, with, I think, Erice/Trapani and Agrigento being the quick stays, maybe just one night each. Try to embrace the way this trip will work out and try to return if you can.

I hope this helps a little --- only you know what matters to you the most and what sacrifices you are willing to make.
