We are doing carry-on luggage only (from US), so can't bring hiking sticks. We'd like to purchase in our 1st city, Taormina. Does anyone know if there's store there that carries them? I tried googling, no luck. Thanks in advance.

Look at Giardini Naxos too, down below Taormina on the water. Google showed some sporting goods stores in this area, both towns.
Where do you fly into? Catania? It is the largest city in Sicily so perhaps you can find hiking poles there.

We fly into Catania, but had planned to go directly to Taormina. We will not have a car.

Also consider shopping online and having them delivered to your first hotel. Either amazon.it or decathlon.it or perhaps others can recommend another sporting goods store with online presence there. Amazon worked great for me for some special things in France last year. I was staying in a rental house but I found a local merchant that also operated as an Amazon pick up point and so I could order enough time ahead to know they were waiting there for my arrival day. If you don't read Italian google translate can help you.
