Sicily Ground Transportation

We are planning a two-week trip to Sicily from October13th thru 26th. There will be four adults and two children (a four-year-old and a one-year-old). We will fly into Catania and fly out of Palermo. We are planning on focusing on: Syracuse and Surroundings, Cefalù and Madonie, and Castelbuono, perhaps staying at Agroturismos 30 or 40 minutes inland.

We have a tentative reservation for a Mercedes Vito 9-seat van through Auto Europe. Our concerns are that 1) the roads might be to narrow to accommodate the van or 2) the expensive van may attract thieves. We would prefer to travel together but could rent two smaller cars if necessary.

Do you have any thoughts?
Thank You!

A quick search on autoeurope.com came up with a Citroen C4 SpaceTourer, a 7-seater that is substantially smaller than the Vito. Ford S-Max and Seat Alhambra are slightly larger than Citroen, also seat 7. Peugeot 5008 is about the same size as the Citroen. Might be a tight fit inside, with bags in the footwells of the kids' seats.
