Sicily for a month

My wife and I are in our mid 60s and will shortly be able to retire. Ww have been to Rome and Venice a couple of times but want a little more adventure. We are thinking of spending the entire month of June next year in Sicily. And we are thinking that our daughter and 10 year old grandchild might be able to go with us. Neither of them have traveled overseas.

We are travelers that enjoy staying in one place and really getting to know a city or town. Ideally we would like to rent an Airbnb for the month. That being said we would like to be able to travel around the island some so we will have a car. My grandchild loves beaches so we’d like to be able to travel only a short distance to a great sandy - ideally not crowded beach. And still be located where we can get great food and have a great time experiencing the history, culture, art, people, markets, etc of the island. My grandchild loves to travel and I want to feed this interest. She is interested in art so being able to satisfy that desire would be a big bonus. We could stay in a big or small town. Or a rural area. We don’t have to have to “do something” every day. So…am I asking too much? Too little? We’re open to ideas and have plenty of time to research further. So please help me with ideas on where to start our planning. For instance suggestions on a home base, cultural experiences, etc would be great.

Sicily is large and one base for your whole trip isn’t enough.
Look at Palermo ,Agrigento and Ortigia as bases.
I would definitely focus on Palermo and Ortigia(Siracusa).

We've had two perfect Sicily-by-car trips. First, we did western Sicily by staying in Trapani. On street parking was easy and free, but you did have to watch for day-of-the-week street sweeping. Two years ago, we did eastern Sicily by staying in the outskirts of Catania, on the metro line. We were able to ride the metro downtown (for daily pizza and cannoli) but easily slipped out of town in our car to go to Mount Etna, Gangi, Syracusa, etc.

Hello,
I've been to Sicily countless times, and I can't recommend enough the east coast, that is Catania, Taormina and Syracuse. All the other baroque cities like Ragusa, Modica, Noto, Scicli, etc are here too. Thus I recommend basing yourself in that area.
Check out this post I wrote. It will help you decide which place is the best for you: Catania, Taormina or Syracuse.
Safe travels.
