Hi,
we are thinking of adding on some days (maybe 2-3) in Sicily at the end of the 17 day tour, which ends in Rome. Any suggestions for travel options to Sicily, (either to Palermo or Catania), or any other tips would be greatly appreciated. I am assuming that we would return to Rome for the trip home to the states?
Thanks,
Deborah
I discourage anyone from going to Sicily for such a short period of time. It has many, many fascinating sights, and they are scattered all over the island. Truly, Sicily is more like a two-week destination.
Agree with acraven. Sicily deserves at the least 2 weeks. With only 2-3 days to add, recommend spending them closer to Rome as to not waste days in travel.
No, Sicily deserves much more time. You certainly could return to stay in a Tuscan or Umbrian village or head south to explore Naples. Or stay in Rome! There is so much to savor there. Or fly home with a stopover in another city, like Amsterdam, London, Paris, or Lisbon.
Save Sicily for when you can give it two weeks.
Hi Deborah -
Aside from Sicily having more ground to cover than you have days to expend, the 17-day BOI tour spends very little time in Rome: a mere 1.5 days. It's a fascinating city with a great deal to see if those sorts of things interest you. As you will have just come off an itinerary involving picking up and moving every other day or so, it might be nice to catch your breath before heading home? I'd just settle into Rome for a few more days and do some leisurely sightseeing and wandering.
Deborah,
I agree with the others and will also dissuade you from traveling to Sicily for such a short stay.
Sicily is a beautiful place to visit but you definitely need time to explore all it has to offer. I spent 3.5 weeks there, this past May, and wished I’d spent more time there!
Enjoy your time in Italy!
I have an almost 3 week Sicily trip coming up and could have easily added another 2 weeks.
Unanimity! When does that ever happen on the Internet?
My husband and I are going on the 17 day BOI tour and we have added 3.5 days onto the end...2.5 on Amalfi Coast and 1 in Pompeii...another option to consider.
If you have not been to Rome before, you could easily use the extra days there. A day to Ostia Antica would be an enjoyable low key kind of day after the "busyness" of the tour. The other day(s) you can go to places the tour didnt.
Where is your homeward flight from? If from Rome, going to Sicily or even the AC uses up a lot of time being in transit.
Thanks to everyone for the advice. I probably should have mentioned that my husband has ancestors from Sicily, (and a distant cousin with whom he has been corresponding), so he would love to visit some of the churches to view records, etc.
I think you are all probably right, though, about needing more time there-I have heard that it is a beautiful place! We may just try to get over there for some other trip.
Here is another vote for adding extra days in Rome. Also, adding a new destination on the end of the tour might be exhausting.
