Sicily

I need your advice on a trip I am planning to Southern Italy. I am thinking of flying into Rome, renting a car and driving to Sorrento.
Taking a day trip to Naples, a day to Capri, cooking class in Sorrento and then driving the Amalfi Coast. Spending a couple of days along the way. Then I think I would like to go to Sicily. Is it worth the hassle of getting there?

Driving looks like there is a lot on road that is not real interesting. Can I take a car on a ferry to Sicily? How many days would one spend in Sicily? Would I then drive back or turn in the car and fly back? Are there different more interesting routes driving back to Rome?

Thanks so much!

I would fly there from Naples with Volotea. You can rent another car in Sicily, if you need one although u won't need one in Palermo or some other location easily reachable by bus or train like Cefalu or Segesta.
Rental contracts often prohibit the use of rental cars on ferries. Also it's quite a long crossing on a ferry, often at night.
