Sicily - east coast

Hi,
My husband and I will be driving from Ragusa to spend our last 3 nights on east coast. We will have 3 full days and nights and would like to stay in an area that will allow us to do day trips to Syracuse and Taormina. Can anyone recommend a central area to stay that would have nice accommodations for our last 3 nights? As we will be leaving from Catania airport at 7:15 AM Monday, we will need to drop car off at airport Sunday evening. Worse case, we could spend last night near airport...

I have been tossing around these ideas:
1. 3 nights Catania and do a day-trip to Taormina & a day-trip to Syracuse; or
2. 1 night Ortigia/Syracuse via Noto & 2 nights Catania.
3. 2 nights ???; 1 night near Catania airport. We will need to drop off car at airport late Sunday evening.

Because of the number of sights in the area, I'd go for two nights in Ortygia and one closer to Catania (to facilitate the visit to Taormina).

I did not have a car in Sicily, so I can't recommend places suitable for motorists.

I would allocate one full day in Taormina and 2 full days in Siracusa. It makes most sense to spend the last night in Catania. As the prior post indicates, Taormina is much more convenient (distance wise) from Catania if you have only one day to spend there.
