We are planning to visit Sicily on a RS tour in early Nov. 2024. Have been reading about the severe drought that is impacting Sicily, parts of France and Spain. Plan to call RS to learn their projections for Fall 2024. Thinking about the need for tourism in Sicily vs the needs of residents and agriculture . I realize that this may be the new normal. Feeling conflicted about visit, not from a creature comfort viewpoint, but from a human impact viewpoint. Anyone returning from 2024 visit to Sicily that can comment. Thank you.
As a person who lives in the arid drought stricken west as we both do, you could do the same thing that we do to conserve water at home. When taking a shower, get wet, turn off the water and then soap up. Then turn the water back on to rinse off. Reuse towels and request that the bed linens not be changed as frequently. Reduce personal laundry i.e. wear things more than once if possible. Also restrict toilet flushing.
Thanks Mary. Customer service at RS says the drought conditions in Sicily have been the same the last few years. We are certainly used to conserving here at home. Sounds like that training will do us well in Sicily.
Does the drought being the same for the last few years mitigate the water situation? Is the new normal now the new acceptance?
I would say that the situation is hardly relived by you not going or using an on and off shower and no new towels every day. It is a start but we are fooling ourselves. There are simply more tourists. and more locals too. Necessary to the economy anyway and thus it is a catch 22 for us all.
Hello,
We were in the Eastern side of Sicily in early March. No one mentioned a drought at that time and I didn't actually realize it was a problem until later. Europe has been careful with their water for decades, so I was already trying hard not to be wasteful and respect the limited resources. Contrasted with our Spain trip in May of 2023. They mentioned the drought affecting their olive oil crops.
I will say that one of the local taxi drivers in Syracuse who was chatty asked us to tell folks at home to come to Sicily because they desperately need the tourism dollars. He spoke of growing up without a choice between a life of crime. And how much better life is now. But they need our dollars.
Just our recent experience. I hope it helps you decide.
Thank you Sunny Blue Flax. Your experience and wisdom was what I was hoping for. Appreciate it!
You're welcome!
