With the drought situation in Sicily, we are trying to decide if it is irresponsible to go in April 2025. The worst seems to be in Agrigento in the west, and we will be in the east, but the whole island is still affected. We realize that if we are not renting a room or an apartment, someone else probably will, but we are struggling with the ethics of this situation. Any thoughts on this?
It's been mentioned before that the Sicilian economy needs tourism $$$. Do the best you can to limit water consumption: short showers, etc.
Why should it be irresponsible? First of all we don't know what the weather will be like next year, so when you go it might not be dry at all. Second of all, the best way to help people in Sicily is to spend your tourist money there.
Thank you for your responses.
Be sure to do everything you can to spend money where it is will stay in Sicily. RS mentions this but it is always a good idea to stay at family run places, book directly with them whenever you can, and eat, drink and shop at smaller, non-chain establishments whenever possible.
Chain hotels and restaurants leave only the minimum of money locally as salaries and the rest of the money gets sent to corporate. Minimize your footprint and maximize your impact.
Have a great trip,
