Sicily: Driving to Monreale in May

I'm going to be in Sicily in early May and I'm considering driving to Monreale on our way to drop off the car at the Palermo airport. We'd be coming in from the west side over the mountains on SS186 and not via the ring road around Palermo. I'm seeing a lot of conflicting info about traffic and parking in Monreale - some people say its insane and others say its not bad in the offseason. Is this plan doable and sane or should we just drive straight to the airport, drop off the car, go to our hotel in Palermo and then head to Monreale by bus?

I visited Monreale in early October and had no problem parking. There is a well marked multi floor parking garage on Via Palermo. It’s about a 5 minute walk from there to the Duomo.

I parked at my B&B, but off season, parking at one of the public lots shouldn’t be an issue. We took the bus into Palermo. While it’s less than 5 miles between Monreale and Palermo, the bus ride is about an hour. Have €1 and €2 coins for the parking ticket machine.
