Sicily Dress Code

Please advise as to what one might wear in churches, restaurants and museums.

My impression of Sicily is that most people are proud but not wealthy. Dressing for churches and museums is the same as elsewhere in Italy. Modest dress for churches; casual for museums. For restaurants, I’m sure there are fancy restaurants, but we ate at several moderately priced restaurants and just wore our regular travel clothes. We never felt out of places.

Dress modestly in churches. A lot of the old Sicilian folks (and many of them are old especially off the tourist track) are conservative and dress respectfully. Restaurants and museums are like anywhere else. The less casual the restaurant, generally the nicer the clothes. Basically, if you're well put together and you cover arms/legs in churches, you'll be just fine.

Skip the shorts, short skirts and flip flop type shoes and dress with modesty.

For dinner in nicer restaurants nice casual. My spouse never beings a sports jacket when traveling and we ate at the nicest restaurant on Ortigia.

I recommend modesty in all areas. Clothes, behavior, and and manners.

Have you been elsewhere in Italy? If so it’s very similar. Sicily is different but not that different in terms of dress codes.

Churches - knees and shoulders covered. If you are going to mass then dress up a little (polo or button shirt, nicer blouse) but if visiting as a tourist then just make sure knees and shoulders are covered and you’re fine.

Museums and general touring - anything you want. In summer shorts are fine.

Restaurants - casual ones you can just wear whatever you do during the day. Nicer ones at dinner - pants and a button up shirt or polo or blouse. Casual dresses are fine for ladies. Sleeveless or above the knee is normal - this isn’t a church, that level of modesty is only in churches. Nice jeans are fine too. I’m sure there are formal places but in general nice casual is all you need.
