What is the best public transportation from Catania to Taormina? And do we need to book in advance? We are looking to go to Taormina just for the day. Thanks!

If you're going directly from the airport, there are buses right outside when you exit. You just buy a ticket at the booth. It was less than 8 EUR when I went in 2015. If you're in central Catania, you just need to find the bus station since there is more than one. I believe there is a stop right at the Catania train station (you can see on Google maps), which is probably the easiest to locate. The bus is much more preferable than the train because it drops you off right by the Taormina town gate as opposed to way down the hill at the Giardini-Naxos-Taormina station, which would require a separate bus/taxi to scale the steep hill.
I went to Taormina just for the day too, it was super easy and comfortable to get there by bus. I came from Siracusa and then came back to the airport on the return. I just bought the ticket a day before at the kiosk. It's a bit cheaper if you buy online in advance. Here's the website (just have Google translate from Italian if you need to): http://www.interbus.it
