we plan to fly to palermo..rent a car and travel around..our 2nd stop will be sorrento...should we keep the rental and drive up the boot to sorrento or drop the car off and fly or train to sorrento? any suggestions?

Drop-off charges in different cities add a lot to the rental car bill, you might want to turn the car in when you leave Palermo. You can take the train from Palermo (perhaps break up the trip a little), or fly from Palermo to Naples. There may be a ferry from Palermo or Messina to Sorrento (depends on time of year), but it's also a long trip. Paestum is definitely worth a visit, but avoid Monday when the museum is closed (although the archaeological zone is open).

I've done that drive up the toe and there's not much to see except rural countryside. The one major highlight is Paestum, which is just south of Salerno. It's not difficult to visit Paestum from Sorrento, if you're interested. I think I'd opt for returning the car in Palermo, then taking the short flight up to Naples. Then you can take a Curreri bus from the Naples airport right to Sorrento. You don't need or want a car in Sorrento.
