Sicily by Train/Bus

I have seen conflicting threads on here about public transportation vs renting a car in Sicily- parking for rental cars and lack thereof- as well as automatic rentals that are not so “automatic”- can anyone recommend the best option for someone flying into Palermo and out of Catania? Can you take public transport to Mt. Etna, Agrigento, as well as other cities? Thanks

Yes, you can, and that's the only way we've traveled in Sicily; however, from your other post it seems you're trying to cover an awful lot of territory in a short timeframe. If you stick to that itinerary, you will definitely need a car (and will still be rushed). On public transportation, you're on "their" schedule, not yours.

I spent 18 days traveling around Sicily by train and bus. I didn't see everything, not did I even start out thinking that I would. To begin with, I don't much care for classical ruins, so I did not try to get to Segesta, Agrigento or Selinunte. I had to be patient, but I wouldn't hesitate to do it again.

However, don't expect to get much of anywhere by bus on a Sunday or holiday.
