Sicily: Arrangements for Visit to Lipari

We are two couples planning a fall trip to Sicily. It’s the first time any of us will have been in Sicily. We plan to start with a week in Palermo in late October, with several day trips, then train to Milazzo at the beginning of November to catch the ferry to Lipari. We want to stay overnight there before continuing our train trip to Taormina, then Siracusa, and flying out of Catania. It looks like there are frequent trains and ferries. Do we need to buy tickets for the train and ferry in advance or just buy them before we board the day of the trip?

Thanks for your help and you can throw in suggestions for favorite accommodations and restaurants, too!

In late October you can buy the hydrofoil tickets at the pier in Milazzo on the day of travel. but keep in mind that t the time of the year, there is a likelihood that the hydrofoils will be canceled due to winds or rough seas. There is also a ferry, which is slower and is less likely to be canceled. I'd be sure to check to see if either is running on the day you want to go to Lipaari. Also know that the season will be over, so many businesses on the island will be shuttered, but some will still be open as the island has a year-round population.

You know that you can also go to Lipari by sea from Palermo...no need to go to Milazzo.

I agree with everything above. No need to book way ahead that time of year, maybe just the night before for the ferry.

Do a search for Palermo restaurants and you'll get a bunch of hits here. November 1 is a bit of a cutover date for a few innkeepers and tourist restaurants to close. The flip side is that crowds will be sparse and prices are extremely soft. If it were me, I might wait until the week or two before to book rooms.
