Sicily and the Amalfi Coast in June

Hi - planning a 2 week trip with my family in mid-June- first week are home base is Palermo and day trips from there to visit our roots. The following week picking up my nephew at Naples airport to go to Sorrento- Pompeii- Positano. Is it best to leave Palermo a day or 2 ealier and see taormina and leave from Catania or visit Taormina while vaca in Palermo and leave from Palermo airport to Naples? should Sorrento be my homebase and day trip from there? while in Sorrento rent a car or train/bus everywhere? looking forward to the family vaca and want to make it as stress free as possible. thanks in advance

If it was me (given your short time in Sicily), I would concentrate just on the western part of the island instead of trying to rush all the way over to Taormina/Catania. If you're already going to see the Amalfi Coast, Taormina will seem a little repetitive. They're not exactly alike but, honestly, I wouldn't put in the effort just to see Taormina at the expense of other places that are closer to Palermo. I liked Taormina (no doubt it's beautiful), but it didn't exactly rock my world, having been to Amalfi Coast and Capri already.

Sorrento doesn't require a car - there is good and cheap bus service from there.

Agnes, thanks for your quick reply; greatly appreicate your input. I know there is so much to see and not enough time- I much rather get the flavor of each area otherwise it feels like a layover and never really seeing anything.
