Sicily and Sorrento in late March/early April

Just back from Northern Ialy, and it seems I have the "explore Italy bug"! Has anyone out there traveled in Sicily in late March? What to expect in terms of weather and enjoying moving around and seeing the island and its towns and sites? Then what about the Sorrento and Amalfi areas, maybe continuing there in early April? Would this be a good season for all this, or would it be wiser to wait until later in the spring, if I have the flexibility? Thanks for any input!

Check the historical weather info at weatherunderground.com for Sicily. For personal experience, years ago I took a Cosmos bus tour in March from Rome to Sorrento and then across to Sicily for about 5 days. The weather was very nice, the wild flowers were in bloom and we fell in love with Sicily. I have since been back twice, both times in October, also a fine time to go to Sicily.

The weather will be similar to where you live in Monterey County, at that time of the year, except for the fog, which you won't find in either Sicily or Sorrento.

Hmmm, Roberto, does that mean I should expect periodic flash flooding from overflowing local rivers? if so, which rivers? Grazie!

we were in Sorrento in early March in 2010 and it pretty much rained every day. We put on our raincoats and walked all over the city. Took the bus to Positano, the one clear day there, the road to the Amalfi was washed out so we could not go that far. Nevertheless we loved Sorrento and we are going back this year and taking our 14 year old granddaughter during her spring break end of March beginning of April.

I've been to Sicily several times, but never in late March. I do, however, have friends there and they love late March and Early April. The almond trees are in bloom, and they keep telling me to come in April next time, before the high temperatures. It can rain any time -- once in September we had alternating days of storms and oppressive heat! Weather is weather, but for the most part, Winter is over by the end of March, and Winter is their 'rainy season.'

I based out of Taormina, which is a beautiful walkable town. Taormina has beautiful Greek Ruins, the Greek Theatre, and the beautiful aqua Medeterrean is its back drop. From Taormina, we also toured Greek Ruins in Syracuse, several wineries, and Mt. Etna.

Take a look at legendofsicily.com

On the last trip we flew Rome/Catania, went to Taormina, toured the East side, then took a regionale train to Cefalu stayed seaside (also jaw dropping beautiful), then on to Palermo. Palermo is like Naples, gritty, busy, traffic and horns -- and is now just coming into its own as a "Site." My husband loved Palermo for its history. We stayed in an old Palace that was right in the City Center and we walked to all of the sites from there.
Flew back to Rome from there and then on to the U.S.

If you have any questions, feel free to PM me. I'm working on a trip report. Every time I stay in one location for more than 4 nights I rent apartments and save a bundle.

We started a month-long trip on March 20 one year. We had quite a bit of cold and rain when we started in western Sicily. Ten days later in Agrigento, it was hot. Just be prepared for either. We went on up to the Naples area and it was lovely, still with occasional rain. With a choice, I'd probably wait until April to start, but airfares are cheaper in March!

Thanks for all these comments, my friends. I have since booked my trip for the month of May, including the RS Sicily Tour at the beginning of the month, then up to Naples and Sorrento, finally a few days creeping north to Venice, where I will spend a few days before flying home. I have posted a couple other messages looking for specific guidance related to some of those spots.
