Hello! Husband and I are active, in our 60’s-70’s, Greek-American and would love to visit Sicily and the Bari region starting mid-May of this year. I am thinking about 3 weeks in Sicily and about 10 days in the Bari region. Does that sound reasonable? We are foodies, love art, culture and history and venturing off the beaten path to see how the locals really live. We plan to rent a car. We don’t want this trip to feel rushed, so staying in a place for a few days to explore the region is what we love. Would love to connect with a couple of local guides for possible day tours. Husband is flying from Greece and I am flying from Chicago. Thinking it’s best to start in Sicily and end in Bari. I realize we are a bit late to the game since we have not booked our flights yet, so hoping to get things in solid motion this week. We have done many roadtrips over the years in our motherland of Greece and now look forward to expanding our horizons! Any itinerary suggestions? Things to avoid?
By Bari area I assume you intend the entire region of Puglia, or are you interested just in Bari?
If you are interested in the whole Puglia region then I would borrow a few days from Sicily and make Puglia at the very least 12 nights. Puglia is large.
Do you plan to drive between the two or fly and have a separate rental? It’s a very long drive and it involves a car ferry. Once you cross into the mainland at Villa San Giovanni (Calabria), it’s another 6 hour drive to Bari. It’s a whole day on the road depending on where you start in Sicily.
