We will be going to Taormina from Palermo next April 26 and staying for 4 days. Should we stay down at the beach or the city center? Both look attractive, but at that time of year, I doubt we would do anything at the beach other than hang out at some bars. Also where is the funicular? I can't find it on google earth.

We visited Taromina April 28-29. We stayed in Giardini Naxos and were glad we did. We found a great hotel overlooking the water for €70. Walking along the waterfront was quite relaxing. We took the bus up to Taromina and as the driver glad not to drive up. Taromina was very busy all day, lots of competition for restaurants, gelato, cappucino...All in all we were quite happy
down below. By the way May 1 is a huge holiday in Italy.

Here's the 411 on the funicular. I've only made a day trip to Taormina, so I can't give advice on where to stay.

I have stayed at the beach and in the old town, I prefer the old town. The beach is large pebbles for the most part. You can take the funicolare or a bus.
