Arriving in Sicily, only have 3 days. Should we rent a car, travel by train or bus?
Hi Margaret, It depends on where you're flying into and what you're most interested in seeing. If for example, you're arriving in Palermo, there is a lot you can do in 3 days without a car. If on the other hand, you're arriving in Catania, a car would be handy if you want to go to Taormina, Mt. Etna,, or beyond. We were there in May and flew into Catania and rented a car. It gave us lots of flexibility for getting around the country. We traveled in Sicily for 2 weeks but dropped the car off at the airport in Palermo and spent the last 3 days without a car. Someone else will probably know more about bus and train travel in Sicily. It's a wonderful place to visit! You'll have a great time!
I was going to start a thread about car rentals in Sicily, but figured I'd just add to this thread. Does anyone have any advice on the best way to rent a car for a week or so in Italy? The prices I've come across via various web searches seem over the top. In fact, if anyone can share insight on renting a minivan (i will be bringing my kids and parents) that would be appreciated. Also, what are the best Sicily guide books? Rick Steve does not have one for the island unfortunately.
DK Eyewitness Travel Guide: Sicily
Lonely Planet guide. DK is good for deciding where to go, LP for getting there. I did the RS tour, but also some days before and after using public transport. With only three days I'd be inclined to visit Taormina and Ortigia, with a side trip to Noto, using public transport. Another option would be to visit the other side of the island, Palermo, Trapani, Erice.
If you are at all interested in archeology pick up Blue Guide: Sicily.
As Sharon said, it depends where you want to go. I just spent 3 days in Palermo a month ago and still didn't see all (also my second time there). Not sure if your 3 days includes travel time or not. If you want to get away from whichever town your flying into I'd say go by car. Once your out of the city driving is not bad at all. I'd suggest having a GPS and good map with you though!
Have fun...Sicily is great!
