My multi generational family is looking to rent a house for 2 weeks next April in Sicily. We do not want to be in a city but want to be able to do some day trips and want access to a beach. We know we won't see the entire island so need to know what area would be better...the Catania side or Palermo?
Here is a great link with tons of info about Sicily. I see they have a section on agriturismos and other rentals.
That's a tough question. I'd get a guidebook and make a list of the places that sound most interesting, then plot them on a map. You might find you have a cluster of sights you want to see that helps with the decision. Also check on special events that intrigue you.
Sicily has so many wonderful places, I don't see how you can go wrong.
If possible, consider a week each on the West and East sides. I was in Sicily in late April and the wild flowers on the western side were incredibly abundant and colorful. The sea will be too cold for bathing in April so either go later in the year or reconsider the need for beach access. I liked the western side better, partly because of the Greek temple ruins.
I assume you will have rental car/s?
