Shuttle bus from Naples to Pompeii

Coming from Rome -arriving at the Centrale station in Naples.
Rick Steves newest Rome book suggests “City Sight Seeing /Italy “ shuttle bus service to get from train station in Naples directly to Pompeii.
The map in his book shows two locations for pick up.
One across the street from Centrale train station , which is ideal.
But having gone to the shuttle’s website they only show one pickup at least a mile west of train station-closer to the port. (Piazza Municipio)

Has anyone used this service to get to Pompeii and do I need clarity?

I'm going to have to go back to my RS guidebook, I don't recall a shuttle bus. I do know he recommends the Circumvesuviana and Campania Express trains which are in the Garibaldi Station which is in lower level of Centrale Station. The Circumvesuviana runs every half hour and takes about 30 minutes and the station is right at the gates to Pompeii.

Thank you for your interest!
I reached out to the Company, they confirmed what Rick Steves says in his book is accurate !

The company name is
CitySightseeing Italy

There reply is

“ We have a stop near the train station, in Corso Lucci n 199 ( next to Hotel d’Anna)
Please take a train that allows you to be there at about 9:30.”

Catch Shuttle 9:30 near Centrale station

I'm curious about your motivation to use the Shuttle for€34 instead of the train to Pompeii for €4. What was it you preferred with the shuttle option?

It boiled down to pg. 478 in RS book Rome

“CitySightseeing Italy offers a convenient, clean, and stress-free shuttle bus from Naples to Pompeii. The handy Centella station bus stop is located across the street near the Hotel D’Anna.”

That’s what sold me.
I’ll let you know if it was all that and a bag of chips!

for all that excess money does the bus throw something else in maybe? Do they give a guided tour around Naples on the way? Or perhaps have a hostess service?

How frequent are they? Which entrance at Pompei?

That's all new to me.

Hmmm. That's sure not what their website says. It states that the pickup point is at Piazza Municipio (Largo Castello), which is quite some distance from Napoli Centrale. I guess I'd be cautious of what "they" told you.

Truly appreciate your concern.
The address provided on the website is their office and a pick up point.
However there’s also a “stop”near the train station .

Planning is fun but only when it all works out!

You never know until you try. I was reading my copy last night and based on the RS guide I might have tried the shuttle over the train as well. We were based in Sorrento and so it didn't matter, but I did write in my trip report that I thought the Circumvesuviana train is unfairly vilified in some reviews. We spent 12 hours over 2 days in Pompeii and it was the highlight of our trip. I hope everything works out for you.

I would point out that we don't know for certain if the OP is making a same-day-return daytrip from a hotel in Rome, or whether there is an ultimate destination for the same day, like perhaps Sorrento. My point is that the Circumvesuviana is a very different experience with luggage and without luggage.

Both with the CIrcumvesuviana and with a tour bus company, the non-changeable, non-refundable character of advance, discounted Frecciarossa train tickets means that returning to the Naples train station near the predicted time is a high priority, if that's what you are doing. There have been complaints here about late or omitted Circumvesuviana runs, and also about highway traffic jams along the Gulf of Naples.

I've taken the Circumvesuviana to Pompeii and the OP made the right choice. The Circumvesuviana is a time-travel trip back to the NY subway of the late 1970s. Graffiti all over the station signs, pickpockets on the prowl for tourists, no air-conditioning, and trains that often don't run on schedule. The CitySightseeing bus is much more reliable--and much safer--than the Circumvesuviana. One hitch: I don't know if this is still true, but a friend who took the bus a few years ago said that you must return on the round trip that you booked--there is no lingering in Pompeii and taking a later bus.

Thank you Thos

It’s true
You must return on the agreed round trip schedule.

The time you’re given is approximately 4 1/2 hrs.
My hope is to get back to Naples and have a couple hours in the Archaeological Museum, dinner and catch 8:00 train back to Rome.
Wish me luck!

In the last week of May, we had to wait an hour for two seats at Sorbillo Pizza.
