Shower Guide to Rome Hotels for larger persons

Being a rather large person, I am worried by what I hear about the phone booth size showers in many Rome hotels. Using Rick's book I have narrowed my choice down to 3 hotels, Paba, Aberdeen and Sonya. Anybody have any experience with these places? Can you tell me if the showers are tiny? Or any suggestions for another hotel?

Hi Jim,
I'm not sure if by "large" you mean tall or stocky in build?

LOL. Both. Big and Tall. High and mighty.

Jim, this is a tricky question because in many hotels it can all depend on which room you get. I think I would try emailing the Aberdeen (8 of us stayed there in '05) and ask specifically for a room with a large, easily-accessible shower. We found the staff extremely friendly and eager to please! Loved the hotel...and breakfast.

You're very smart to be thinking of this. I've often wondered how some big people would ever be able to use some of the showers I've seen in Italy. On the other extreme are the bathrooms that just have a shower head in the middle of the room - no stall, no curtain, just water going everywhere. Amazing.

Yes. I am not a large person but taking a shower in a bathroom with no curtain or enclosed stall was pretty interesting. They have this little cover that goes over the toilet paper to keep it "somewhat" dry. I stayed in a hotel in Assisi which I liked very much (La Pallotta) but it did have one of these open showers.

Jim,

I looked at the photos both on each hotel's website, and on TripAdvisor - all of the showers were the small, square ones, and at Sonya many of the photos showed triangular ones...teeny!

Paba and Aberdeen have some bathtub rooms - Paba had shower curtains, and Aberdeen had those 1/2 walls made of glass (similar to a shower curtain pulled only halfway across the tub, only made of glass - see TripAdvisor for photos). At least with those, you can back up to the 'rear half' of the tub when you need a lttle more wing room!

With ANY European tub, you may not have the shower wand mounted on the wall - it will very likely be a hand-held affair. They're fine; some people are surprised when confronted by them!

Usually you're given a choice of a shower or tub room at the time of reservation. Pick the tub, and stay away from Sonya (apparently)!

Have a great time!

Check the overall layout of the bathroom if you can. We had a bath in a B&B that had a toilet so close to the sink that your knees almost had to fit under the sink. It wasn't a problem for us but anyone over 5'10" and 150# might have found it tight.
