Should we stay in Spello or Assisi in Umbria?

We are planning on a short stay in Umbria and are deciding on either Spello or Assisi to stay in. We don't care or don't mind if they are "touristy" as we see ourselves as tourists. We would visit the other but are confused on which to stay in. Any thoughts would be appreciated!

Assisi is best in the evening after the day-trippers leave. We stayed five nights at Hotel Pallotta and hated to leave. Photos here.

Spello is smaller and in my opinion a good day trip. Assisi has a lot to see. It is especially beautiful at sunset and at sunrise when the pink stone has a golden look to it.

I prefer Spello because I like how quiet and sleepy it is at night.. It is easier to find free parking outside the town walls in Spello if you are driving out and touring each day.

Loved the photos, Jeff. They brought back great memories. Assisi is really special.

Loved the photos too...thanks for sharing them. Majority seems to think Assisi so we will give that a try and day trip into Spello as suggested. Thank you all for your suggestions!

I recently spent two weeks in Assisi and agree it's a better base than Spello. The one thing to know about Hotel Pallotta is that they don't have air-conditioning. If you happen to have a heat wave while there (like we did), you may end up roasting in your room at night. You could open the windows but then you have all the street noise from the major pedestrian thoroughfare underneath, and mosquitoes.

I would stay in Assisi and visit Spello. Assisi is lovely at night when all the daytrippers are gone. Also enjoyed Spello but as other posters stated it is much smaller. If you are looking for an agriturismo--On one of our visits to Assisi our family of 4 stayed in apt. Papaveri (the poppies, 2 bedroom/2 bathrooms) at Agriturismo La Fornace which is only a few km outside of Assisi. You can see Assisi from the pool. www.lafornace.com We were here in August and on Ferragosto day we visited Spello and had a nice lunch. That evening La Fornace held a lovely bbq for all the guests at no charge and my husband, 2 sons & I swear they had the best tomatoes we have ever tasted. Would stay here again.
