Should we Stay an Extra Night in Venice or Florence?

My Husband and I are trying to decide to give our extra night to Venice or Florence. We will do either 3 or 4 nights in one or the other. Where would be the best to spend our extra night?

Venice will be our first destination and Florence our second. We are also traveling to Sorrento and Rome.

Thoughts?

Florence! Venice is charming, but more to see in florence and/or you can do day trips to other towns in Tuscany. Have fun!

Why not have a night in Bologna on the way between them.

Florence is all about Renaissance art and architecture. If you love it, 3 full days in Florence is barely enough. If you don't, 3 full days in Florence is a long time.

You don't say when you're going or how long you're planning to be in Rome and Sorrento. If you don't want to wallow in sculpture and painting in Florence, maybe add that night to one of those two destinations.

Another alternative is to spend the 4th night in Venice, leaving early and sightseeing in Verona (one of my favorite places in Italy) or Padua for the day, arriving in Florence in the evening. Store your luggage at the train station for the day.

You could choose Verona, Bologna or even Siena for a single night stay.
Padua and Vicenza are options for the day if you choose Venice.
Pisa and Lucca if you choose Florence.

I'm in Chani's camp: if you love Renaissance art and architecture, you'll love Florence. We had 5 nights there and couldn't tear ourselves away for a single day trip (next time!). But speaking of day trips, it's a great location for any number of those.

Depending on YOUR interests, there is plenty to see in both towns. Or as others mentioned, pick a different city as a day trip, or stop along the way for the night. Watch some videos and see which towns might appeal to you. Have fun!

It all depends on your interest. Having said that, the idea of a day trip from Venice is quite doable. You could choose do Verona and Vicenza in one day. Padua is another option for a day trip.

Danielle,

My suggestion would also be Florence! It's a beautiful city, there's lots to see there and some nice restaurants.
