Should we spend the night in Florence?

We have reservations at an agritourismo in San Gimignano for four nights as a base for Tuscany. We are planning to include a day, day and half, by heading to Florence. Two questions:
1. We are renting a car. Is there a place to park just outside Florence and then train in?
2. Would it be better to shorten our stay and book a night in Florence? One thought is to do this at the end of our trip, turn in our rental car, 'do Florence' and train to Milan for our flight back to the states.
Thoughts are greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

We stayed at the Hilton Florence Metropole which is located outside of town and is easily accessible off the autostrade. If you stay there, they have free parking and a free shuttle that takes you in/out of town. There is also a shopping mall next to the hotel that has ample parking--not sure if it is free (looks to be). At the mall, there is a bus stop on the street. Search the hotel on googlemaps and use the earth view to see the hotel and the mall next to it. Have fun on your trip.

By all means dump the car prior to Florence. We couldn't locate our rental car return office and had to follow a taxi to find it.Florence at the end with train to Milan sounds good, maybe one more night there ? we are also flying in/out of Milan in September, for a cheaper flight, tho staying in Florence
