Should we make Vatican reservations or just arrive later?

I see you can book online and select a day but it is not refundable. Do we need reservations in late May? Should we do a tour?

Any advice on the Vatican would be appreciated. Thank you!

If you plan to visit the museums in the afternoon you won't have a problem with the lines. They tend to die out after lunch time. This doesn't mean the vatican museums won't be crowded, just that there will be little or no line outside waiting go get inside.

As for a tour, if you have never been to the museums before I always suggest taking the tour. The museums are huge. The tour hits on all the most popular rooms. You will have the option at the end of the tour of going into the basilica or re-entering the museums.

Is there a specific tour you would recommend?

The vatican itself offers a 2 hour tour that takes you to the most popular rooms and ends at the Sistine Chapel. They use the headsets so you can clearly hear the guide. Most groups are 12-15 people. During high season they can be more. You can book them at:

This tour will allow you to bypass the line to get inside. It also allows you to re-enter the museums after the tour if you wish to or you can go into the basilica.

There is also a tour that includes the basilica but that is only run on Saturdays and fills up quickly.
